Nelsen was an American artist, designer, and author who lived and worked in New York City for more than 50 years. He received a Fulbright Scholarship in 1959 to study painting in Paris and later worked in textile and wallpaper design while creating distinctive painted wood carvings.

The figure has the wonderfully idiosyncratic character associated with Nelsen’s carved work, with articulated-looking limbs, sensitively carved facial features, and a restrained painted surface.

This piece comes directly from the estate of Donald Nelsen, according to the auction house from which it was acquired.

Overall good vintage condition with surface wear, tonal variation, small marks, and irregularities consistent with age and the handmade nature of the work. Please review photographs closely. See less
