Signed “Sueko K.” at the base, the work combines the warmth of its terracotta coloration with a distinctly architectural approach to the human figure.

The composition reveals itself gradually: a curve suggests the torso, a projecting plane defines a knee, and deep recesses separate the figure from its integrated rectangular base. These shifts between recognizable anatomy and abstraction give the sculpture movement and visual complexity. Its faceted forms evoke the language of Cubism, while the earthy palette and tactile surface lend an intimacy that suits its tabletop scale.

Original tooling marks, deliberate incisions, and subtle surface variations are integral to the work. Light moves across the ridges and recesses, emphasizing the contrast between broad, gently rounded areas and sharply defined edges. The geometric treatment continues around the sides and reverse, making this a rewarding piece to view from multiple angles.

Sueko Kawamura earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1964. She subsequently worked at Richard Rush Studios until her retirement in 2000, creating architectural models for projects including Chicago’s John Hancock Building and Sears Tower. That professional background offers an intriguing context for the spatial awareness and structural character of this sculpture.

After retiring at age 77, Kawamura returned to her love of painting and sculpture, becoming a longtime participant in the Evanston Art Center’s figure sculpture program. Her figurative clay work received critical attention in Newcity in 2016, and the Evanston Art Center honored her career with a retrospective in January 2022.

At 11 inches tall, this signed work has the presence to stand alone while remaining easy to incorporate into a collected interior. Display it on a console against a pale wall, beside a stack of art books, or within a bookcase where its warm color and dimensional form can provide a focal point.
