A sunburst beach at the edge of somewhere else — rippling aquamarine water, two pyramids adrift on the tide, agave … Read more A sunburst beach at the edge of somewhere else — rippling aquamarine water, two pyramids adrift on the tide, agave in bloom on the bluff, and a landslide of jeweled toy-geometry spilling down the sand. Small polyhedral cubes drift through a striped sky like something between a Rubik’s Cube and a UFO — drawn a full year before that toy existed.

Signed and titled by the artist/author/professor Ivar Zapp, 1973, in Prismacolor pencil. Comes with its original label from The Vorpal Galleries on Battery Street in San Francisco — the gallery that launched M.C. Escher’s American career in the early ’70s and later brought mezzotint master Yozo Hamaguchi stateside. The original 1973 price tag ($750) is still affixed to the back.

Drawing is approx 16w x 13.25h. Framed in warm walnut with a linen mat. Frame is 24w x 21.25h.

Ivar Zapp studied at SF state before moving to Costa Rica to teach architecture and eventually publish Atlantis in America. It was during this time he must have been drawing and drew the attention of the prestigious Vorpal Gallery.
