Handcrafted from coarse … Read more A wonderfully sculptural vintage Peruvian pottery mask with an expressive elongated face and richly textured, smoke-darkened surface.

Handcrafted from coarse reddish-orange earthenware, the mask has a mottled charcoal-gray and earthy brown surface that appears integral to its traditional firing rather than simply painted over the finished ceramic. Areas of warm terracotta emerge naturally across the raised decoration and textured surface.

The dramatic face is modeled with circular pierced eyes, a long projecting nose with pierced nostrils, oversized dimensional oval mouth, tapered chin, concentric forehead bands and geometric circular motifs at the temples.

Research suggests an origin within Peruvian folk-pottery traditions, possibly northern Peru and the Piura region, where long-established pottery communities produced anthropomorphic and pre-Columbian-inspired forms using local earthenware and traditional firing methods. An exact workshop attribution has not been established.

The reverse retains an intriguing incised maker or workshop mark, currently unidentified.

A highly textural piece with a strong architectural presence, particularly suited to an eclectic collection, organic-modern interior, gallery wall or grouping of global folk art.
