hans gerson
painter, draftsman, printmaker.
studied at the academy of fine arts in munich (under carl von marr), the academy of fine arts in berlin (under arthur kampf), the académie julian in paris, and in berlin under lovis corinth.
gerson undertook numerous trips throughout germany, particularly during the summer months (including lake constance and wasserburg), as well as to belgium (veurne).
in 1917, he created prints for the magazine "krieg und kunst" (war and art).
"the art of hans gerson offers a good example of a phenomenon common in our time. He is the epitome of the younger generation, educated in the impressionist tradition, who were inspired by the french, took masters like monet and degas as their models, but whose painterly interests they pursued further, striving for something more modern beyond what they had already expressed." (karl schwarz, 1920)
landscape dominates his work, while figurative representations play a rather subordinate role. Gerson found a truly unique expressive-realistic style.
during the third reich, hans gerson and his wife remained in berlin.
