The print comes from the first volume of the famous city book "Civitates Orbis Terrarum," edited by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg, published around 1572 in Cologne. The image, measuring approximately 40 x 54 cm, shows two independent panoramas superimposed: the view of Eschwege ("ESCHWEGES") above and that of Fritzlar ("FRITZLAR") below. Both town views impress with their topographical accuracy, the depiction of prominent towers, churches, and fortifications, as well as lively foregrounds with figures in contemporary dress. The fine coloring (copperplate/copperplate) lends the architectural details and the surrounding landscapes a remarkable depth. The reverse side of the document (image_21.png) shows the original Latin text with information about Eschwege, Fritzlar, and Friesland. Considering its age, the document is in very good condition; it exhibits the typical vertical center fold and an authentic patina with slight browning and edge wear, which underscores the historical value of this original document.
