The work is unsigned; the painting style, the support (cardboard), and the type of ship depicted suggest a date of origin around 1890–1920. At the center of the painting lies a steamer with auxiliary sails (schooner or brig rig), listing to one side in a choppy, gray-brown sea: The hull, coated in red lead, is clearly visible, the masts are still upright, and smoke is rising from one of the funnels—the ship is struggling against the wind and waves, appearing to have run aground or to be listing heavily. In the right foreground, rugged rocks or sandbanks hint at the cause of the accident.
