This striking example beautifully captures capron’s distinctive approach to ceramic furniture, in which traditional craftsmanship, naturalistic decoration and architectural form come together in a highly expressive yet sophisticated composition. The substantial circular tabletop is composed of individually crafted ceramic tiles arranged in an elaborate concentric, sunburst-like composition. A particularly refined feature is the inner band of hand-decorated tiles depicting individual botanical studies of leaves, branches and plants. Each motif has its own character, giving the surface an almost herbarium-like quality. The restrained palette of terracotta, burnt orange, ochre, earthy brown, olive green and smoky grey creates remarkable depth while retaining the warm, organic character for which capron’s work is celebrated. The ceramic top is framed by a beautifully patinated dark-stained wooden structure. Its substantial geometric base, constructed with four architectural legs and intersecting stretchers, gives the table a strong sculptural presence from every angle. The contrast between the rigorous geometry of the wooden construction and the richly articulated ceramic surface is particularly successful. Rather than functioning merely as a piece of occasional furniture, the table reads as a complete decorative composition — somewhere between furniture, sculpture and ceramic art. The tabletop is clearly impressed: capron vallauris france roger capron was one of the key figures associated with the post-war revival of ceramics in vallauris. His furniture incorporating ceramic surfaces became an important part of his oeuvre, combining the traditions of southern french pottery with a distinctly modern approach to form and decoration. With its generous 88 cm / 34.65 in diameter, low profile and unusually elaborate botanical decoration, this is a particularly decorative and visually compelling example of capron’s work. The table is preserved in good original vintage condition, with an attractive patina and age-related traces of use consistent with its history. The natural ageing of the wooden structure complements the earthy ceramic surface and contributes to the authenticity of the piece. A sophisticated statement piece for a refined interior and an excellent example for collectors of roger capron, vallauris ceramics and post-war french design.
