Vargg Hans Rome Castel Sant'Angelo St. Peter's Basilica Tiber Italy 1965. Impressive, with this work in August 1965, he created an exceptionally dynamic and modern interpretation of a classic Italian veduta. Executed in the oil on hardboard technique, the painting measures approximately 55.5 x 101 cm and captures the iconic silhouette of Rome in an expressive impasto technique. The viewer's gaze is guided from the historic Ponte Sant'Angelo (Bridge of Angels) across the Tiber River directly to the majestic dome of St. Peter's Basilica on the left and the imposing Castel Sant'Angelo, crowned by the statue of the Archangel Michael, on the right. The thickly applied paint and the vibrant, almost abstract forms lend the architecture an enormous archaic power, while the palette of cool, multifaceted blues stands in striking contrast to the warm, light ochre and pink hues of the Roman sky. Both the signature on the front and the precise handwritten date and title on the back (August 1965) confirm the authentic period of origin of this mid-century artwork.
