The chairs feature strong, architectural oak frames with sculptural turned front legs and supports, elegantly shaped armrests and stretcher construction. Handwoven rush seats are complemented by distinctive vertical woven rush panels in the open backrests. The combination of solid oak, traditional rush weaving, pronounced turned elements and substantial proportions is characteristic of French modernist and regionalist furniture associated with Charles Dudouyt and his contemporaries during the 1930s and 1940s. Particularly attractive is the contrast between the warm, naturally patinated oak and the lighter woven rush. The chairs have retained their authentic vintage appearance, with beautiful variations in the wood and traces of age and use that contribute to their character. The rush seats and backrests remain in good condition, and both chairs are structurally sound and ready for use. A striking and decorative pair with a strong French Modernist character, equally suited as fireside chairs, occasional armchairs or statement pieces in both contemporary and traditional interiors. France, circa 1940. Dimensions Width: 65 cm / 25.59 in Depth: 55 cm / 21.65 in Height: 83 cm / 32.68 in Seat Height: 35 cm / 13.78 in Condition Good vintage condition. The solid oak frames retain a beautiful warm patina with minor scratches, marks, wear and variations in tone consistent with age and use. The woven rush seats and backrests are in good preserved condition. Structurally sound and ready for use. We consider the visible patina and age-related wear an integral part of the authentic character of these circa 1940 chairs.
