The design combines the clean lines of … Read more An exceptionally spacious three-seater sofa by Danish designer Sven Ellekaer, manufactured by Coja. The design combines the clean lines of Scandinavian furniture from the 1960s with a decidedly comfortable, almost casual upholstery.

The sofa is in very good, authentic vintage condition. The dark brown leather is soft and supple, displaying a patina commensurate with its age and showing minor signs of wear. The wooden frame is also well-maintained, with only minor marks of use. Overall, it is a characterful piece with a very attractive combination of warm wood and dark brown leather. The soft leather has developed an appealing patina over decades, giving the sofa precisely that authentic depth so highly valued in original vintage leather furniture. The webbing has been replaced recently.

A distinctive feature is the open wooden frame, which not only serves as a supporting structure but also defines the entire design of the sofa. The horizontal beams wrap around the sides and back, lending the large sofa a surprising lightness despite its dimensions. Particularly striking are the regularly spaced dark leather loops along the lower frame – a structural detail that simultaneously becomes a key design element.

Sven Ellekaer belonged to that generation of Danish designers who combined Scandinavian design language with an increasingly international and more homely interpretation of modernism. His seating designs for Coja are especially known for their exposed wood construction, leather upholstery, and exceptional comfort. Coja, based in Culemborg, Netherlands, produced several of his designs, blending Scandinavian design with Dutch furniture manufacturing.
