The composition depicts an elegantly draped young woman seated upon a naturalistically modeled rocky outcrop, gazing toward a small child positioned at her feet. Her flowing classical garments, carefully modeled features and expressive gesture reflect the allegorical and sentimental figurative sculpture popular in France during the late 19th-century Belle Epoque period. Cast in regule/spelter and finished with a warm bronze-tone patina, the sculpture retains its original brass title plaque inscribed PREMIER APPEL / Par H. Huppe. See less
