A handsome and highly decorative late 19th-century Persian Serapi carpet, circa 1880, distinguished by its spacious drawing, strong architectural medallion, and beautifully softened natural color palette.
The composition is centered by a dramatic deep indigo-blue geometric medallion, surrounded by an expansive ivory ground and framed by warm salmon, coral, and terracotta tones. Large-scale angular floral devices, stylized leaves, palmettes, and branching forms are freely arranged throughout the field, giving the carpet the bold yet spontaneous character associated with desirable early Serapi weaving.
Particularly attractive is the contrast between the saturated indigo of the central medallion and the softly aged ivory, salmon, pale blue, soft green, and terracotta tones surrounding it. The colors have mellowed beautifully with age, producing the understated palette that is especially desirable for today's interiors.
The broad main border carries a continuous geometric floral vine against a warm terracotta ground, providing a strong frame while remaining harmonious with the more open central composition.
The carpet is of good quality and in good condition considering its approximately 145-year age, showing even age-related wear and areas of lower pile. From the photographs, the wear contributes to an attractive antique surface rather than detracting significantly from the overall design. The carpet retains strong visual presence and is very decorative.
