The work depicts two laborers among rugged stone formations, rendered with expressive brushwork and a distinctive palette of rust, slate blue, gray, and earthy brown.

Signed “SAARI” and dated “’58” at the lower left. Oil on canvas, presented unframed.

Onni Saari (1920–1992) was an American painter and illustrator born in New Hampshire to Finnish parents. Associated with the Dublin Art Colony, he studied in Manchester, Boston, and Paris before settling in New York City. Saari was a close friend of celebrated American artist Ellsworth Kelly and worked across portraiture, figurative painting, interiors, still lifes, and abstraction. He died at his home in Hudson, New York, in 1992. See less
