A beautifully restored mahogany serpentine sideboard from Drexel’s Wallace Nutting Furniture Treasury collection, dating to 1955.
Based on historic American furniture forms documented by antiquarian and preservationist Wallace Nutting, the Furniture Treasury collection was among Drexel’s more ambitious traditional furniture lines. This substantial sideboard combines a dramatic serpentine silhouette with richly figured mahogany veneers, delicate contrasting inlay and classical brass hardware.
The façade is particularly striking, with four graduated serpentine drawers flanked by two cabinet doors and a pair of upper drawers. The side cabinets provide additional concealed storage, while the shaped top and conforming base continue the curves of the case. Fine inlaid decoration along the stiles and sides adds detail without overwhelming the exceptional mahogany grain.
Recently restored and refinished to revive the depth and movement of the figured mahogany while retaining the character appropriate to a vintage piece. Original brass hardware complements the warm wood tones beautifully.
At 54 inches wide, the piece has substantial presence without the scale of an oversized traditional buffet. Equally suited as a dining-room sideboard, living-room storage cabinet, entry console or statement case piece.
