Vintage full-bodied running horse weathervane mounted on a colorful turned wooden display base.
The dimensional horse is formed from lightweight hollow ferrous metal and retains a visible joined construction typical of molded or formed sheet-metal vanes. The complete assembly includes the running horse, arrow, directional letters and hollow ball elements. The metal is magnetic and appears to be painted sheet steel or iron rather than solid cast iron.
The horse has an elongated racehorse profile with a flowing mane and tail, recalling the traditional American running and trotting horse weathervane forms popularized in the 19th century, including George M. Patchen- and Dexter-type designs. No maker or specific historic attribution has been established.
The black-painted metal has authentic age-related wear throughout, including surface oxidation, paint loss and rubbing, particularly along exposed edges and high points. The turned wooden base appears to be a later display mounting and is painted in layered blue, green and yellow tones, giving the piece wonderful folk-art character and allowing it to be displayed as a freestanding decorative object.
A distinctive piece for an equestrian interior, library, study, collected Americana space or folk-art collection.
