Up for sale is this beautiful arpillera, signed by the artist, Consena Papa. Mounted on board for ease of framing, it measures 20" x 20". It is in very good, gently-used condition, as pictured, with one yellow sun ray needing to be resecured - bright, vivid, and wonderful.
This art form became popular in Chile during the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973–90). The production of arpilleras was both a political statement and an important source of income for the women who created them, known as arpilleristas. Constructed from fabric and richly embroidered, arpilleras were originally subversive political statements, depicting scenes of impoverished living conditions and government repression. This art form spread through South America and evolved to illustrate the arpilleras' dreams of a better world, such as this beautiful scene of rural life
