The original work is a Carrara marble statue dating from the 18th century, which decorated the drinking troughs of the Château de Marly, and which can be admired today in the Louvre Museum.
The scene shows a stallion rearing up, held back with difficulty by a groom. The artist was able to transcribe with precision the nervous state of the animal, and the wild strength of its posture. The fineness of the physiognomic details of the horse and the man sculpted here should be noted: the mane in the wind, the bandaged muscles, the fight that they both seem to be engaged in.
