The grandson of the renowned artisan Manuel Jiménez Ramírez, he is carrying on a three-generation family tradition begun in 1927, when Manuel began carving wood animals at the age of 8, representing the farm animals he cared for in the mountains. Manuel Jiménez is credited as the pioneer of the wood carvings commonly called "alebrijes," a talent passed on to his family in the Taller Tonas y Nahuales.

Printed on heavy paper measuring 11 1/2" x 17", this print is part of a limited edition portfolio, #90 of 200 issued and one of several from this set we are selling. In immaculate condition, as pictured, it is matted in a pH neutral 16" x 20" mat for ease of framing in a readymade frame.

The Tonas and Nahuales represent the animal assigned to us, which will accompany us on our life's journey, depending on our birth date.The Zapotec ritual calendar consists of 20 months with 20 animals, with 13 numerals, totaling 260 days. It includes categories such as: power, wisdom, evil, healing, movement, and communication among the people.



Artwork Technique: Copal wood carving, decorated with natural dyes and pigments, complemented with acrylics.



Description of the Tona: It represents the fusion of two Zapotec tonas. The Ocelot is the animal of the highest hierarchy of power; this animal represents boldness and spirituality. The Owl is the animal of the highest hierarchy of wisdom'
