Unlike a conventional table lamp fitted with a fabric shade, the porcelain vessel itself forms the illuminated shade. A single light source is concealed within the pedestal, allowing the finely potted porcelain to diffuse a soft, atmospheric glow across the painted surface. When illuminated, the lamp becomes both a functional light and a luminous work of Chinese decorative art.

The shade is remarkable for the delicacy of its construction. Its broad ovoid body has been formed in exceptionally thin, translucent eggshell porcelain while retaining an even profile, smoothly finished rim and beautifully balanced proportions. Viewed through its open neck, portions of the decoration on the opposite exterior wall remain visible through the porcelain body—compelling evidence of its almost paper-like refinement.

PORCELAIN QUALITY AND CONSTRUCTION
The removable shade is formed from extremely thin, translucent eggshell porcelain. The porcelain is sufficiently fine that exterior decoration on the opposite side can be perceived through the vessel wall when viewed from inside.

The shade retains a notably even body, smooth glazed interior and finely finished circular rim. No heavy opaque body, applied liner or secondary shade material interrupts the porcelain’s translucency.

The pedestal is separately formed in glazed porcelain and contains the lamp’s single electrical socket. A broad upper gallery supports the shade securely while allowing it to remain fully removable.

The cobalt-blue borders are exceptionally regular and may incorporate transfer, stencil or another assisted decorating method. The colorful bird-and-flower scenes display visible painterly variation and are cataloged as hand-painted polychrome enamel decoration.

The term “eggshell porcelain” accurately describes the shade’s exceptional thinness and translucency. The lamp is not cataloged as a traditional lithophane because no molded variable-thickness relief image has been identified. ORIGIN AND DATING
The original auction catalog identified the lamp as a fine Jingdezhen Chinese lantern-style lamp with a hand-painted eggshell-porcelain shade and dated it to the 20th century.

No legible factory, workshop or artist’s mark is visible in the supplied photographs. Jingdezhen is therefore retained as the documented auction identification rather than presented as a photographed factory mark.

Closely corresponding marked Jingdezhen eggshell-porcelain lanterns share the present example’s two-piece construction, ovoid translucent shade, flared pedestal, bird-and-flower decoration and approximately 14½-inch overall height. Specialist examples are commonly dated to the 1950s–1970s, supporting the mid-20th-century working date used here.

Jingdezhen has served as China’s principal porcelain-production center for centuries. During the 20th century, its workshops continued producing finely potted wares decorated with underglaze cobalt and colorful overglaze enamels for domestic and international markets.

DECORATIVE NOTES
The shade presents multiple related bird-and-flower compositions rather than one mechanically repeated scene.

Visible subjects include paired blue birds, long-tailed red and russet birds, black-and-gray birds, flowering branches, pink blossoms, blue and lavender blooms, lotus-like leaves and small botanical sprays.

Because the birds are decoratively stylized and vary among panels, they are cataloged collectively as garden birds rather than assigned definitive ornithological species.

The palette and imagery are related to the broad Chinese famille-rose decorative tradition. The lamp is described conservatively as polychrome enameled porcelain with famille-rose influence rather than represented as Qing-dynasty famille rose.

The original auction listing cataloged the object as a “Fine Jingdezhen Chinese Lantern Style Lamp with Lithophane Shade, Eggshell Porcelain, 20th C., Featuring Chinoiserie Hand-Painted Bird and Floral Motifs” and recorded its dimensions as approximately 14¾ inches high by 8 inches wide.

Subsequent examination confirms the complete two-piece lantern construction and exceptional translucency of the eggshell-porcelain shade. The term “lithophane” has been omitted from the principal cataloging because the decoration is painted rather than visibly formed through molded relief.
