Handwoven in wool, this 2x17 extra-long vintage Mazandaran kilim runner, originating circa 1940-1949 is an exciting addition to Rug & Kilim’s Vintage collection. Showcasing an understated spectrum of tonal cream, ivory, and soft beige stripes, its architectural length and organic texture radiate modern sophistication.
On the Design:
From the secluded mountainous region of Mazandaran in northern Iran, vintage Mazandaran kilims represent one of Persia’s most enigmatic and modern flatweave traditions. Long before mid-century modernism or Western minimalism captured the global design consciousness, the weavers of Mazandaran were creating textiles defined by radical simplicity, prioritizing pure raw wool, un-dyed earthy palettes, and serene linear cadence over complex ornamental patterns. Traditionally crafted on narrow village looms and intended for domestic warmth, these kilims celebrated the subtle beauty of hand-spun yarn and elemental geometric bands, forming a timeless link between rustic folk heritage and modern architectural aesthetics.
This runner masterfully exemplifies the understated, painterly soul of the Mazandaran weaving tradition. An expansive field of flat-woven wool reveals a gentle cadence of transverse tonal stripes shifting gracefully between notes of warm cream, soft ivory, sandy beige, and pale oatmeal. The natural variations in the wool yarns yield a subtle, painterly abrash that gives the minimalist layout extraordinary depth and visual movement underfoot. Exceptional in proportion and quiet elegance, this vintage Persian kilim runner offers a tranquil, gallery-worthy foundation for expansive hallways, long entryways, and light-filled modern spaces. The accompanying book, Orient Stars: A Carpet Collection by Heinrich Kirchheim, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B080) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
