Hand-knotted in wool, this 8x12 antique French Savonnerie carpet originating circa 1920-1929 is a majestic masterpiece in Rug & Kilim’s Antique collection. Defined by a central floral rose wreath tied with golden ribbons, a beige field with ghostly acanthus fronds and a laurel border, it radiates timeless neoclassical romance.
On the Design:
Originally established in the 17th century under royal decree by King Henry IV, the Savonnerie manufactory created the ultimate symbols of French royal prestige. It was elevated under Louis XIV to furnish the grand palaces of the Louvre and Versailles. Celebrated for their imperial wreaths, neoclassical architecture, and painterly floral garlands, Savonnerie textiles were designed to embody sovereign luxury. During the 1920s, French workshops experienced a magnificent revival, taking inspiration from this storied royal heritage to reinterpret classic courtly motifs, most notably the triumphant wreath—with the soft, ethereal pastel palettes favored in early 20th-century aristocratic interiors.
At the focal center of this carpet lies a breathtaking circular wreath of blooming roses rendered in shades of blush pink, crimson, and coral, tied together by flowing golden ribbons. The open oatmeal-beige field is gently textured with subtle, tone-on-tone ghosted acanthus fronds that shimmer softly within the pile. Encircling the field is a scalloped inner garland border in muted sage green and buttery yellow, giving way to a broad, dusty rose perimeter decorated with a continuous, deep burgundy laurel-leaf vine. This antique carpet seamlessly bridges royal French grandeur with soft, poetic warmth underfoot—offering a commanding centerpiece for grand living rooms, formal dining halls, or curated historic estates. The accompanying book, Pierre Culot by Anne Bony and Matthew Tyas, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B082) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
