The lamp … Read more A striking scandinavian mid-century pendant lamp, model 5302, produced in sweden during the 1950s by einar bäckströms metallvarufabrik. The lamp consists of three individually suspended conical shades arranged at different heights, creating a dynamic, asymmetrical composition. Each shade combines a polished brass upper section with a lacquered metal lower section in a different colour: red, black and warm beige. The contrasting colours give the fixture a playful character while retaining the restrained proportions associated with scandinavian design of the period. The lower sections of the shades are decorated with repeating rows of quatrefoil and cross-shaped perforations, while a more delicate band of small star-shaped perforations encircles each brass upper section. When illuminated, light filters through these openings to create a decorative pattern of points and shapes around the shades, in addition to the direct downward light. The three shades are suspended from black cables connected to curved brass arms extending from a sculptural lacquered ceiling canopy. Their staggered arrangement allows the individual shades to overlap visually when viewed from different angles, giving the lamp a particularly lively and sculptural presence. A charming example of swedish 1950s lighting, combining brass, colour and playful perforated decoration in a distinctly mid-century composition. Height 75 cm, diameter 38 cm.
