The volumes are … Read more This superb freestanding sculpture depicts a "peacock-pigeon" whose silhouette is interpreted in a decidedly Art Deco style.

The volumes are condensed, the lines gain tension, and the plumage unfolds in a succession of broad facets that capture the light. The tail, widely flared with its geometric facets, becomes a truly typical composition of the period, while the generously developed breast balances the whole with striking restraint.

We love the aged silver hue of its patinated spelter. And finally, its pairing with an elegant black marble base with ochre and ivory veining, in the spirit of the Portoro marbles prized during the Art Deco period, is perfect.

This piece fits perfectly within the quest for a synthesis of forms that characterized French animal sculpture of the 1930s. It is more about the simple observation of life. Refined aesthetics take precedence over descriptive realism.

The Perrina stamp is engraved on the back of the tail. This Parisian firm was active during the Art Deco period, producing animal-themed creations, lamps, bookends, and inkwells, demonstrating true expertise in the decorative arts of the interwar period. The artist may have been Marcel Bouraine, but unfortunately, there is no signature.

The piece is in very good condition.
