The antique French floral still life with carnations presented here is a small oil on canvas painting, mounted on cardboard,
dating from the early 1900s, Art Deco.
The composition features a refined bouquet of flowers, with cut carnations in shades of red, pink, white and orange-yellow,
arranged in a free and natural manner. Several long green stems emerge from the composition, while a red flower, fallen onto
the supporting surface, introduces a pleasing element of movement and naturalness.
The painting is characterised by rapid, rich and impasto brushstrokes, particularly evident in the petals, suggesting the softness
and texture of the flower heads. French painting from the 1930s.
Antique paintings with flowers, floral still life signed lower right “Léon Galand”, an important French painter and illustrator.
Léon Laurent Galand (1872-1960) was born in Montpellier and belonged to the generation of artists active between the late
19th century and the first half of the 20th century. He studied under important masters of French painting, including Ernest Michel,
Robert Delaunay, Gustave Moreau, Fernand Cormon and Joseph Blanc. The latter, in particular, played an important role in
his academic training.
Galand began to gain recognition within the French artistic milieu as early as the end of the 19th century. In 1896, he was admitted to the
Société artistique de l’Hérault, while from 1904 onwards he regularly exhibited at the prestigious Salon des Artistes Français in Paris.
His participation in official exhibitions continued during the following years, accompanied by various distinctions: he received an
honourable mention in 1903, a third-class medal in 1909 and a gold medal; he also obtained the second Prix de Rome,
one of the most important distinctions reserved for French artists of the period.
In 1924, he was awarded the Légion d’honneur, further evidence of the esteem he achieved within the French artistic scene.
Throughout his career, he also continued to participate in the Salon d’Hiver and other national exhibitions.
The antique painting is presented in a gilded frame, contemporary with the artwork. Some paintings by this artist are held
in the Montpellier Museum.
The antique frame and the oil painting have been carefully and professionally restored. 1930s, 20th century.
