This oil painting on cardboard, measuring 40 x 51 cm, is signed in the lower right corner with a cursive, partially illegible name and the year "94" (1994). It depicts an atmospheric, impressionistic-representational winter village landscape: In the wide, snow-covered foreground lies a still, diffusely milky expanse of snow in delicate light gray-white; the middle ground is occupied by a group of small houses and farmsteads, their light gables, roofs, and colorful accents (windows, doors) gleaming in the subdued winter light. Behind this, another, horizon-dominating strip of trees in gray-brown tones stretches out, while the sky glows in muted pinkish-beige-gray—a classic North German or East German winter scene. The painting style is loose, fresh, and gestural: broad brushstrokes, impasto application of paint, spontaneous color and light effects. This style is typical of German or Eastern European Late Impressionism of the second half of the 20th century, in the spirit of Bernard Buffet or Late Impressionist artists of the GDR school. The cardboard used as a support and the free, rapid painting technique suggest a direct plein air or studio sketch.
