This print belongs to the well-known cycle "Travel Pictures Italy" (plate 9) and was created in 1919. It is an original lithograph on paper (LITHO) measuring approximately 28 x 36 cm. The dynamic composition, executed in bold black lines, depicts a man in a rowboat, rowing with palpable physical exertion through rough, choppy waters. The expressionistic lines and the strong black-and-white contrast impressively capture the restless sea and the rower's powerful movement. from an art historical perspective, this print is an outstanding example of Pechstein's masterful printmaking in the period following his time with the artists' group "Die Brücke," in which he processed travel impressions using reduced yet highly emotional and expressive forms. The work is marked with the limited edition number "171/800" in the lower left corner and, according to the notes on the reverse, is listed in the catalogue raisonné under Rodenberg 454.
