The story behind it is legendary: Cesare Cassina supposedly disliked the prototype so much that he smashed it, breaking the backrest, which then fell into the exact bent shape that makes the sofa famous today. Magistretti is said to have declared it perfect. What you see is therefore no accident: the seemingly lowered backrest, the soft contours, and the side panels from which the armrests emerge like cushions. The espresso-colored leather enhances this comfortable, almost compact effect. The real ingenuity lies invisibly within the upholstery. An ordinary bicycle chain is embedded in the foam of the backrest—you use it to fold the back cushion upwards, where it becomes a headrest. with a single movement, the low, lounge-style sofa transforms into a high-backed chair with full neck support, and back again. Cassina patented this mechanism, and it remains the reason why the Maralunga is a staple in every design collection. Each of the three seats can be adjusted individually.
