Vintage 3D Mixed-Media Maritime Ship Portrait of a Racing Yacht, Style of Thomas H. Willis.
A captivating and intricately executed mid-20th-century mixed-media maritime ship portrait depicting a classic gaff-rigged racing sloop cutting through dynamic swells. This work is distinctly styled after the renowned maritime folk artist Thomas H. Willis (1850–1925), celebrated for his unique three-dimensional compositions.
The artwork features a masterful combination of hand-painted backgrounds and applied relief elements. The yacht's sails are fashioned from layered white paper panels that stand proud of the backing board, casting distinct physical shadows that simulate a true, billowing sail.
The background showcases an atmospheric horizon complete with a distant lighthouse, soaring seagulls, a red-and-black surface buoy and a fleet of miniature competing yachts. Three micro-painted crew figures occupy the deck, (a signature Willis touch) that establishes the grand scale of the vessel.
The piece is housed in its original giltwood frame. The deep profile of the frame serves as a protective shadow-box.
