Vico Magistretti designed it for Cassina in 1973, and it won the Compasso d'Oro in 1979. The story behind it is legendary: Cesare Cassina supposedly disliked the prototype so much that he smashed it, breaking the backrest, which then fell into the exact bent shape that makes the sofa famous today. Magistretti is said to have declared it perfect. The real ingenious feature is hidden within the upholstery. An ordinary bicycle chain is embedded in the foam of the backrest—you use it to fold the back cushion upwards, where it becomes a headrest. In one easy step, the low, lounge-style sofa transforms into a high-backed chair with full neck support, and back again. Each of the six seats can be adjusted individually. Placed opposite each other, the two sofas form a self-contained seating group where everyone faces each other—and because both come from the same manufacturer, the leather tone is a perfect match.
