Hand-knotted in wool, this 2x3 vintage Gabbeh rug originating circa 1950-1959 is a charming, small-scale pictorial textile in Rug & Kilim’s extensive archive. Depicting two whimsical, face-to-face lions framed by a vibrant polychromatic block border against a soft cream field, it brings joyful folk art spirit and storytelling character to intimate spaces.
On the Design:
In nomadic weaving traditions, lion imagery or Shir Gabbeh holds a celebrated position, historically symbolizing courage, strength, and ancestral protection. Curated with uninhibited folk art spontaneity, Gabbeh pictorials offer a playful window into the weaver’s personal narrative, translating ancient symbols through bold graphic simplification. This vintage piece captures that narrative warmth, transforming legendary lion iconography into an endearing, artful scene.
Centered against an open ivory-cream field, two expressive lions stand in friendly alignment. The lion on the left features a marigold-yellow lower body paired with a crimson torso and charcoal mane, while its companion on the right is rendered in rich rust-red with a deep maroon mane. Charming details like geometric dots along their flanks, expressive faces, and raised tails, give each figure a distinct personality. Encircling the scene is a rainbow mosaic inner border of geometric color blocks in sky blue, pink, sage green, and mustard, bounded by a micro-patterned tribal outer guard. Compact and full of heart, this vintage textile serves beautifully as a plush floor accent, bedside step, or wall-hung tapestry. The accompanying book, Jacques Majorelle by Felix Marcilhac and Amelie Marcilhac, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B056) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
