The Smithsonian American Art Museum states that he won a Pulitzer Prize for painting at age 18, studied at the National Academy of Design, continued his training in Paris, Budapest, Vienna, and Rome, and served as a U.S. Coast Guard combat artist during World War II. He later became established as a portraitist and received commissions to portray military officials; the Smithsonian notes that many of his paintings are in the collection of the United States Air ForceSandor Klein was a New York City-born American painter.
