An exceptional … Read more A beautifully restored antique French carved giltwood sofa, reimagined in Thibaut Katsura in Lavender and sumptuous amethyst velvet. An exceptional statement piece combining the romance of an antique French frame with sophisticated contemporary textiles.

The graceful carved frame features a serpentine silhouette, cabriole legs, scrolling foliate decoration and an ornate central cartouche. The original gilt finish has been intentionally preserved, retaining the wonderful patina and age that give the piece its character.

Professionally restored and newly upholstered, the sofa is dressed on the front in Thibaut’s iconic Katsura botanical linen in Lavender. Delicate flowering branches, birds and foliage in soft greens, blues and lavender create an elegant Chinoiserie-inspired composition against the natural ground.

The reverse and outside panels are upholstered in plush amethyst velvet, providing an unexpected and luxurious contrast. Coordinating lavender velvet piping beautifully defines the sweeping lines of the frame and ties the two fabrics together.

Particular attention has been paid to the placement of the Katsura pattern across the expansive back and seat, allowing the botanical landscape to become part of the architecture of the sofa rather than simply an upholstery covering.

The combination of timeworn gilt, soft lavender velvet and botanical linen gives this sofa an unusually sophisticated presence. Equally beautiful viewed from the front or back, it would be particularly striking floating in a living room, drawing room, bedroom suite or sophisticated entry hall.

Condition: Excellent restored condition. The antique frame retains variations, rubbing and patina consistent with its age; these are part of the character and history of the piece rather than defects. Upholstery is newly completed.
