Admirers of Chinese Art Deco will appreciate the way this rug brings together the elegance of traditional Chinese floral imagery with the restrained modernism of the Deco era. Chinese Art Deco rugs emerged during a period when workshops in cities such as Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai began adapting traditional Chinese motifs for increasingly cosmopolitan Western markets. The resulting designs were neither strictly traditional nor purely Western, but a distinctive meeting of the two traditions.

Here, that dialogue is expressed through a luminous blush-pink field bordered by a rich olive-green frame. Delicate flowering branches trail organically along the edges, with finely drawn blossoms and leaves in rose, teal, ivory, and muted gold.
