Purvis Young (American, 1943-2010). An original mixed media ink drawing on found paper. Outsider art, depicting figures in red. Signed to upper right. Retains original JOY MOOS GALLERY label.
Purvis Young grew up in the Overtown neighborhood of Miami. As a teenager, he was sentenced to three years in prison for breaking and entering. While incarcerated, he rediscovered his childhood passion for drawing. After his release in 1964, Young began to paint using acrylic and commercial paint on assemblages of found wood, cardboard, masonite, and whatever materials were available to him. Young was a prolific painter and his work is widely exhibited and collected today.
