Petite in scale, this charming little storage chest is the perfect place to stow household odds and ends. Dated to the late 19th century, the small cabinet may have been used as part of a home altar or shrine display. Left open and framed with scrollwork carvings, the upper shelf likely displayed altar figures or food offerings, while the lower compartment held incense, tablets and other accessories. The dark lacquer that cloaks the exterior has aged beautifully with time, now textured by a fantastic, allover crackle.
