This low drum stool from Shanxi province was hand-carved from solid limestone over 150 years ago, designed to add the essential stone element to a traditional Chinese garden. Stone drums such as this were fixtures of courtly gardens and outdoor pavilions, contrasting foliage with the permanence of stone and providing a place to sit and ponder. The minimal form of this 19th-century example has become beautifully weathered with time, textured with chisel marks and a lovely timeworn patina.
