This small Chinese locking cabinet from the early 20th century has a richly aged patina that only time can achieve. The little cabinet has a minimal, square-corner design with straight lines and a burgundy-brown lacquer finish with hand-painted decoration.
Traced in gold linework, the double doors are painted a mirrored scene of two mandarin ducks swimming amidst lotus flowers. This pairing conveys a blessing for a harmonious marriage, a motif echoed in the shuangxi (囍) symbol overhead for double happiness. Designed for general household storage, the storied chest is perfect today as a side table, vanity or nightstand.
