This monumental apothecary cabinet once resided in a Qing-dynasty (1644-1911) Chinese pharmacy, filled with the dried plants, resins, and minerals of traditional herbal medicine. The antique cabinet dates to the late 19th century, constructed of pine with mortise-and-tenon joinery to a grand scale we've never seen before in our years of collecting.
The towering cabinet has 84 small drawers, some still fitted with interior dividers and patterned with hand-painted characters identifying the contents. Additional storage is provided below, with two larger drawers and a lower compartment with an interior shelf. The surface of the cabinet has faded wonderfully with time, but traces of the original lacquer finish texture the front in colorful shades of pink, orange and green.
