A classic piece of Chinese furniture, this tall lacquered cabinet was likely part of a traditional wedding dowry, bestowed upon the groom by the bride's family filled with fine silks, linens, and other gifts. This type of tapered cabinet is known as a "miantiao gui," or noodle cabinet, named for the rounded, noodle-like molding of the legs and frame.
Tailored like a good suit, the cabinet has been modified with a narrowed frame in keeping with traditional joinery methods. The double doors open to reveal three shelves and a single drawer, while a larger drawer provides additional storage below. A perfect solution for narrow spaces, the slender cabinet is minimal and classic, decorated only by a brushed lacquer finish of warm brown color and the original brass hardware.
