An exceptional, gallery-tier mid-century Balinese modernist portrait bust depicting a traditional ceremonial Legong dancer. Standing 9¾ inches tall, this elegant sculpture represents a definitive example of the post-war Indonesian woodcarving renaissance, showcasing a brilliant blend of theatrical performing arts and clean mid-century modern design principles.
The figure is hand-carved from a single solid block of premium, warm caramel-toned tropical hardwood. The dancer is styled in full theatrical regalia, wearing a spectacular, towering fan-shaped headdress (Gelungan) detailed with deeply undercut floral filigree and geometric pierce-carved rays that create an incredible play of negative space. Her serene, meditative facial features are framed by intricate circular ear plugs (Subeng) and a meticulously incised ceremonial collar over her chest. The reverse view showcases a beautifully straight grain configuration along her back, leading down to clean, hand-faceted chisel marks on the under-base. Unsigned as was characteristic of many premier workshop pieces of this golden export boom, this showcase sculpture is in immaculate vintage condition, entirely complete with all fine crown spikes and delicate contours 100% intact.
