This is a beautiful vintage Chinese porcelain Brush Pot (Bitong), a classic piece of a scholar's desk.
The pot is decorated in underglaze blue (Qinghua) depicting the famous Daoist legend of the "Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea" (八仙过海). The painting features several of the immortals, including Tieguai Li (with his iron crutch), He Xiangu (with her lotus flower), and Zhongli Quan, standing amidst a landscape of mountains and flowing water. The detailed figures are rendered with excellent brushwork, capturing the expression and posture of each immortal.
The rim of the pot is finished with a subtle brown/brown-glazed edge, giving it a classical, aged feel.
Originally used to hold calligraphy brushes, today it is a versatile and highly decorative object. It is the perfect size for holding pens and pencils on a desk, dried flowers, or simply as a stunning standalone piece of Chinoiserie art on a bookshelf.
