Deeply carved and highly dimensional, the face is characterized by dramatically arched black brows, large staring eyes, rounded cheeks, a carved mustache and beard, and oversized ears finished with gold-tone hoop earrings. Rich red robes sweep across the lower half of the carving, outlined with restrained gold detailing.

At the center of the robe is a cream-colored hossu, or Buddhist fly whisk, an attribute traditionally associated with Bodhidharma in Japanese art. Its inclusion gives the carving more iconographic interest than a purely decorative Daruma portrait.

The generous scale and pronounced relief give this piece considerable presence on the wall. Rather than a small Daruma doll or tabletop figure, this is a substantial sculptural wall hanging designed to be viewed as artwork.

Hand-carved and hand-painted wood, likely dating to the mid-to-late 20th century. No maker’s mark has been identified.
