French Modernist Oil on Canvas Still Life of Anemones, Nice, France
A charming French oil on canvas depicting a vibrant bouquet of anemones, likely dating to the mid-20th century. Painted with loose, expressive brushwork, the flowers emerge in shades of pink, burgundy, violet, cream and blue against a wonderfully atmospheric deep blue ground.
The bold palette and spontaneous handling give the work a distinctly modernist character, while the subject and coloration evoke the light and artistic tradition of the South of France. The stretcher bears the inscription “11 Rue Alberti, Nice,” providing a direct association with Nice on the French Riviera.
