This charming vintage framed coat of arms artwork is a beautifully executed example of traditional heraldic art, meticulously hand drawn and painted in gouache with shimmering metallic ink highlights that lend depth and richness to the composition.
At the center is a striking red heraldic shield, prominently decorated with a fortified stone castle featuring an arched gateway and a series of lower arches. The castle is a traditional heraldic emblem associated with strength, protection, security, and fortitude. Above it appear three stylized fleur-de-lis, one of heraldry’s most recognizable motifs, historically associated with nobility, honor, purity, and French heraldic tradition.
Crowning the shield is an elaborate knight’s helmet, dramatically rendered with an open visor and surrounded by scrolling mantling. Rising above the helmet is a colorful arrangement of sweeping feathers in red, yellow, white, and darker tones, creating an especially decorative crest. The helmet itself is a classic component of a full heraldic achievement, traditionally signifying martial heritage, rank, and honor. Particularly appealing are the artist’s fine linear details and judicious use of metallic ink, which catches the light and gives the armor, architectural elements, and ornamental details an elegant dimensional quality. The warm, softly aged background further enhances the Old World character of the piece.
The overall framed piece measures approximately 12.75 inches high, 10.5 inches wide, and 1.25 inches deep, while the visible artwork measures approximately 8 by 5.5 inches. The artwork is handsomely presented under glass beneath a wide neutral-toned mat with contrasting inner borders and housed in an attractive wood frame. The understated presentation beautifully complements the vivid heraldic colors without competing with the artwork. Good vintage condition with light signs of handling to the frame. A distinctive decorative piece with wonderful English country, traditional library, Grand Tour, or Old World appeal, this framed coat of arms would look particularly handsome displayed among antique books, equestrian pieces, and other heraldic or historical objects.
