An extraordinary, gallery-tier mid-century Balinese modernist sculpture depicting a celestial dancer or ritual nymph. Standing an impressive 14.75 inches tall, this magnificent masterpiece is hand-carved from a single, remarkably heavy block of premium two-tone Macassar Ebony wood, showcasing the peak artistic renaissance of the post-war Mas carving community.
The figure displays a breathtaking command of anatomical grace and organic timber geometry. The master artisan brilliantly aligned the natural wood composition, allowing a vibrant ribbon of warm caramelized honey sapwood to sweep across the dancer’s face, torso, and thigh, creating an exquisite color-blocked contrast against the deep charcoal and jet-black heartwood. She is captured in an ultra-fluid, dynamic S-curve pose, her arms swept high over her head to gather the rippling folds of her ceremonial drapes. Her detailed, multi-tiered floral headdress (Gelungan) and heavily incised, ornate collar piece showcase exceptional geometric texturing. The magnificent negative space and pierce-carved ribbons framing her body create a stunning play of light and shadow. The wood boasts an exceptionally smooth, hand-polished surface texture yielding an immaculate gallery luster.
