Probably made in France circa 1875, this piece is characteristic of "Toles Peintes" (Painted metal) craft work, which was prevalent from the latter part of the 18th century to the end of the 19th century in Europe. This circular tray depicts lovely floral & vine painted designs on pie-shaped sections of yellow and red alternating backgrounds, all radiating out from a central round element that dramatically featurs flowers and berries on a black ground. The tray also features a moulded edge border around the circumference with hand-holes and a studded pearling treatment along the top edge. We had the base for this tray custom made in order to make it more useful than just a decorative tray; now it can be used as a small coffee table. The tray is not attached to the base and lifts off with ease. The base is finished in ebonized lacquer with hand-painted floral decorations on the legs. This tray is in excellent condition though any scratches, imperfections or rough edges are consistent with the age of this piece (circa 1875).
This tray was purchased on a European buying trip in the early 2000s and once paired with the custom base was part of the display in our high-end interior design furniture showroom. It was never sold. See less
