this brooch is constructed from a silver or pewter tone metal. It depicts a cat drawn by jean cocteau. The cat has a charming face, so typical of illustrations by the french artist, writer and filmmaker. The brooch also features the artists signature too. The brooch fastens with a traditional safety catch and the fastening pin is attached to the brooch with a round hinge. The brooch measures 7.5cm x 5.5cm. It features an oval cartouche on the reverse, which bears the stamps 'comité jean cocteau

the design of this brooch is based on cocteau's wonderfully economical line drawings of cats. His cats are instantly recognisable from their elongated bodies, enormous curling tails, pointed ears and expressive faces — a great example of how he could reduce a subject to a few wonderfully fluid lines. Cocteau's most famed illustration of a cat is his 1959 work “le chat”. Cocteau had a great affection for cats. He once said “i love cats because i enjoy my home; and little by little, they become its visible soul.”
