This impressive landscape-format archaeological plate is titled “1–2. Hydrien. 3–5. Giessgefässe” and presents five contrasting examples of ancient Greek vessels used for storing, carrying and pouring liquids. The composition is dominated by two large hydriae positioned at either side. Both have elegant elongated forms with tall necks and substantial handles. Their predominantly black surfaces are enriched with restrained terracotta and delicate ornamental details, emphasizing the sculptural silhouettes of the vessels. At the center is a particularly decorative pouring vessel rendered in black, terracotta red and cream. Its surface is covered with bold scrolling vegetal and geometric ornament, creating a striking contrast with the more restrained vessels surrounding it. Beside this vessel, Genick includes a fine archaeological line drawing of another ceramic form decorated with a female head in profile and elaborate classical ornament. Two additional pouring vessels appear across the upper section of the plate. One has a distinctive arched handle and low spout, while the other resembles a small lidded pouring vessel or teapot with an elegantly raised spout. The combination of five different vessel types, restrained black forms, richly colored ornament and archaeological studies makes this an especially varied representation of ancient Greek ceramic design. The print originates from the second edition of Albert Genick’s important publication on Greek ceramics, published by Ernst Wasmuth in Berlin in 1883. The complete work comprised 36 color lithographic plates, including four double-page plates, illustrating amphorae, kraters, hydriae, kantharoi, kylikes, pouring vessels, bowls, rhyta and other examples of ancient Greek ceramic art. The lithographs were produced by the Berlin printing establishment Hein & Mosler. Albert Genick (1837–1906), a Berlin-trained architect, became particularly known for his precise graphic documentation of ancient ceramics. This publication is regarded as his principal work. Complete examples are rare, and individual plates from the series are increasingly difficult to find. The black, terracotta and cream coloring remains well preserved, particularly on the richly ornamented central vessel. Light age-related toning with scattered foxing and spotting, principally visible in the background and margins. Minor edge wear consistent with age.
