a few words about the artist:

georges émile capon (1890-1980) was a major french artist, painter, engraver, lithographer, and poster artist.

trained at the école germain-pilon, he was notably associated with the galerie berthe weill (a french art dealer and patron) and moved within the artistic world of the first half of the 20th century.

his work, which includes paintings, posters, and prints, demonstrates a marked taste for the human figure and scenes of everyday life.

he was a friend of raoul dufy, marcel gromaire, maurice savin, francis smith, and andré dunoyer de segonzac.

the influence of raoul dufy and marcel gromaire is evident in his painting.

while belonging to the first school of paris, he nonetheless affirmed his roots by founding the groupe des peintres normands (group of norman painters) in 1925 with his fellow painters pierre hodé and jacques wolf.

during the second world war, he taught drawing and chromolithography at the estienen school while also being a member of the libération-nord resistance movement.

his works are now held in several public collections, notably at the centre pompidou, the musée carnavalet, and the musée des beaux-arts de nancy.

he is the grandfather of the painter gilles ghez, a visual artist.
